To support the launch of the redesigned 2012 GoldWing, Honda’s flagship luxury touring motorcycle, we developed a companion Trip Planner application to extend the onboard navigation system’s capabilities.
The Honda Trip Planner is a Google Maps application integrating POI data from CityGrid. Owners can plan a roundtrip getaway, complete with gas, hotel, food and other places of interest GPS markers. Sharing to the Trip Planner community is also encouraged, with the ability to annotate your trip and provide details of each stop.
The owner could then download their freshly planned trip to the onboard navigation system via a removable SD card in the motorcycle’s trunk. Since we used open source .kml format, anyone with a GPS could use the Trip Planner to plan their ride and share it back out to the community via the application. Rides are categorized by product and type of terrain, with a highly useful search and filtering system built in.
We developed a print and digital launch campaign to raise awareness of the Trip Panner application, using the tagline “Plan to go anywhere.” featuring photography of the new GoldWing exploring Central California’s beautifully scenic Pacific Coast Highway.
